I wouldnt worry to much about the distance from the charcoal to the grate. I would just put the grate about 7 inches down from the top and be done with it.

Plus I like that they reach to the center of the barrel. I found a big difference in the temp from a 3" probe mounted on the side to what the center of the smoker was running at.

Well we got started with a 4x2 built 3 high, and some expanded metal. We also added rebar to hold the ends, and some rebar under the expanded to prevent to much bending.
