Michael, you might have to try a specialty insurer. When I got started I had to do a LOT of calling around before finally finding a company to handle my needs. Ask for Commercial General Liabilty Insurance. I carry $500,000 with a provision to bump to 2 mil if needed (but I have never needed too).

For those very same reasons, I had hoped Alex had found a simple solution to the problem.....................Glad I didnt tell my guy to jump in the lake yet! Shocked Wink Laughing

Just received my general liability insurance renewal yesterday. I was shocked at the price. Still $229 for $1 million.

Thanks for the update I sent him a note also. I was told by my auto carrier no problems when I got my new smoker then they called today and said sorry we can't cover smokers. I'm only looking for theft and damage in case it gets in a wreck but may be nice to get a little more also.

I know this is an older thread, but I got such a great deal from the Auto Owners folks I had to post this.

We just received a quote from our local office here in Alabama for $268.00 per year for a million in coverage!

Every other place we called was up around that $800-$1000 mark.

So I would give the Auto Insurers a call if you are looking for the coverage and or are up for renewal. I just went to their website and plugged in my zip code and found the local agent. Took them about a week to get back to me but only a couple days to get the quote and it was well worth the wait.

The general rule is to find the carrier that is looking for your market; apparently, AutoOwners is very comfortable writing catering companies. Shopping is very important, the agent you know very well may just not represent a company that is into your market. If your agent only writes with companies that are not targeting your market, then you will only be able to get so-so quotes from them. Unfortunately, you sometimes have to leave good agents because they are just not using companies that want you right now. Free markets and all that stuff.

One other thing to beware of is to make sure you have a pretty good idea what your sales are going to be and to be sure that you have been saving up in the event that you have grown significantly. You don't want to spend the money only to find that you owe an additional premium due to your growth!

Yes, I do work in the insurance industry, but not on the sales side. Please feel free to PM me is you ever have any questions about your insurance.

We have almost everything insured with state farm, We have our home owners, 4 vehicles, 2 snowmobiles, 1 motorcycle, our Bobcat skid-steer loader, Snowmobile trailer, and the catering equipment trailer.
But we had to use a different company for the insurance for both of our business's. our state farm Agent said "You do not want to do commercial with us, it is too darn expensive" and he recomeneded a local independent agent. We carry 3-mil. on the storage biz, and 1.5 mil. on the catering.
I forget which company wrote the policy though. I'll see if I can find it and post so you other guys can check rates with them too.

They are both under $300.00 per year, and payable quarterly at no extra cost.
