I recently picked up the cheap BBQ Pro at Kmart, not the one from sears that looks like the ProQ, this one looks like an ECB with mods right out of the box

notice it comes with vents and a real temp gauge, not that "ideal" garbage

also it comes with a charcoal grate. the door seems better than the ECB and theres a pan for under the whole unit

The only real mods I'd consider would be holes in the charcoal pan maybe rest it on a stand for better access and a vent at the bottom.
I'll update it after the weekend and let you all know how it performs.

Dang looks very kewlish. Nice snag. Wish I had one. I got the electric Brinkmann Gourmet model and just love it. You need one of them too. Handy when a person has a bad hangover and has to cook. You just set it and forget it till its time to eat. If you like smoke just throw a chunk or two on the lava rocks. Simple huh?

Thanks for the look 'inside the box'. Make sure and post some pics of your cooks on it here as well!

ok heres my report after doing a 7hr smoke. overall this $30 smoker outperforms the $50 brinkmans with maybe 1 exception. the thermometer is a piece of crap, it just doesn't go above 150, sure its supposed to go past 400, but not a chance it ever will. i was waiting for it to warm up, i stuck the probe in, it was 241, dome said 150. anyway, with a minion burn it held solid for a good 5 hours with a little fluctuation in both directions before it started to drop at the 5th. the results were great, definitely a good purchase.

Just so happened to pick one of those up myself this weekend (couldn't pass up the cheap price). So the one thing that pretty much sucks with this smkoer is the temp guage? No other problems from using it? Any suggestions you might have?

yea, my gauge was useless, I'd stick with a digital probe to get the right temp. maybe it was just mine though, you could probably swap it out with a better one, but i didn't care enough to. other than that its great. Ran strong for about 5 hours before all the coal started burning out. Kept temps pretty well. It'd be easier to control the temps with the vents on the bottom like the WSM but for 1/7th of the price, who could complain! Just use it as if it were an ECB that requires much less work.

It does look like a less pain in the ass the a ECB. I can get an ECB Wally-World for $28. I was looking to buy another bullet style (WSM owner), perhaps this maybe an answer. Does it have vents on the bottom?? Also, w/ your 5 hr cook, how full was the ring??

no, unfortunately there are no vents on the bottom, that would make my life a good deal easier. I think the $70 one from sears has a vent on the bottom, that one looks a lot like the proQ or the WSM cause its got the sealed bottom
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_07115883000P .
for my cook i burned about a half chimney and maybe 2/3 of a pan of unlit.
