Ok I am asking this because this is completely foreign territory for me.
What is involved with putting together a team?
Is there one person who is in charge solely, like a "captain"?
Does the team share the cost of each event you enter?
Does the "captain" get a percentage more of the prize?
Are cash prizes usually split evenly?
If so, does the team itself get a percent of the prize to keep for future event entry fee?

You need to find people who want to form a team.

It depends on the team, some have one chief and lots of Indians, some have lots of chiefs and only an Indian or two.

It depends on the team, some have one member who pays the bills and holds the funds, some share the bills and the winnings.

Did the Captain put more into the team, or is he the I that isn't in team?

It depends on the team, but how long can you get others to do all or the majority o the work, and take a smaller wedge at the end of the day?

You need to work all this stuff out before you get rolling, if you wait till you win and then spring any different rules, every thing will hit the fan.

If you find someone you don't mind driving 300 miles with, setting up a camp site, feeding, drinking, sharing space with, staying awake with for 30 hours or so, break down the camp site, then driving the 300 miles or so home. You've found the perfect team mate, and if it's a member of the opposite sex and not already a family member, marry her!

YMMV!

Thank you SoEzzy. That is what I needed to know. I wasn't sure if there was a norm to follow.

Our team is all split down the middle. We split the cost of comps, and the prize money always goes back into future comps. We have a team checking account and the money goes there. Competition BBQ (at least MBN) rarely gives you a profit. We either drink it up, buy new stuff, or spend it on comps. We don't do the tent thing. We always get a motel room to shower, get a nap, etc. Of course with MBN, you have on site judging, so being clean does help you out a bit. We do have a "Captain" of the team, he is the "Face" of Dr. Swinestein. We split the cooking jobs. He does shoulders, Me and another teammate do ribs, my rib partner does chicken when there is a category, and another guy does the "ANything But" categories. We have one team member that doe no cooking, but is the logistics man. Sets up alot, tears down alot, fixes stuff, runs the turn in boxes, etc. HE is a lifesaver!

My team consists of just me and my wife. Unfortunately we've only done 3 competitions so far and no winnings -- so it's just been nothing but expenses. I'd love to split those with her Laughing Laughing

As far as responsibilities, I take care of all the trimming, rubbing and cooking of the meats. She takes care of preparing the garnish in the turn-in boxes, taking the turn-in boxes and keeping things cleaned up after me. We share in the set-up and tear-down of our camp site.

I couldn't ask for a better teammate.

My team cosists of me and my dad. we split costs and try to split the duties as evenly as possible. If we ever win, we will split that as well. This is not a problem we have had to worry about yet after only 3 comps Smile

It does help to recruit a few buddies or family members to help out we have found since we are only a 2 man team. We feed & beer them and they seem happy with that as payment.

Just keep in mind the "Captain" is responsible for the team at a competition. This means, if someone gets out of hand...you gotta get it straight before your teams get kicked out.

Agreed 100%. Also, the whole team looks to the Captain to know all the rules, regs, etc. Not that we down him when something goes wrong, but he is the go-to guy when you have a question. The Captain is "The Face" of the team. He usually gets more "Congrats" and credit when a win is made, but he has more responsibility, so control your ego and let him bask in glory from time to time!

Thanks for all the advice. My wife is kinda reserved about the whole competition thing. She keeps giving me a look like I have completely lost it Rolling Eyes when I talk about it.

If you are looking into the KCBS or similar type competitions, the smaller the team the less confusing things can be when getting started.

More members can help spread out expenses, but that can also lead to problems if all parties are not after the same goal.

We have always reinvested our prize money or used it for expenses at the next contest. Even when we were lucky enough to have a full sponsor for an entire season including our most sucessful year at MIM back in 2004.

We are down to a 3 man team (My brother and I plus "Jeffro") and have shifted our focus from MIM/MBN contests to KCBS. Our philosophy has not changed over these past 12 years: Have fun, cook our best and make new friends.

Our team is me and 2 other guys that I have help. My philosophy is that I will pay for everything and that way I get to call all the shots.

They are there to assist me. I take all the credit and prize money and all the blame if we get shut out.

You just have to pick your team members wisely. Make sure everyone understands their role and what they are expected to do. I have seen a lot of problems with teams that have too many chiefs and where they try to go by concensus on certain things.

Just some food for thought.

So let me get this straight. If I want to put together a team I'll need:
1. A decent reliable smoker beer that I am comfortable with cooking on.
2. Someone to assume responsibility beer of the team.
3. Plenty of beer good quality meats.
4. A reliable partner beer to help with cooking.
5. If possible get a beer or two.
