I am not a welder, but I would really like to build one my self. I think Im pretty handy but I dont think I would like to spend a lot of money on a welder that I would probably never use again.
Can I use this welder to weld a 120 gal propane tank, If not What would you recomend .

Hi I have a miller It's '' U.S.A MADE '' but If I could not find one made in the states then I would buy the hobart 140 or something that will do 1/4 '' you never know when you mite need it around and you will find ways to use it again , so with that said buy once , buy smart , buy '' U.S.A. made '' I hope this helps good luck have fun and work safe take care. |

The important things to look at in the specs are the thickness of the metal it will weld and the duty cycle. The Harbor Freight one will only weld 10% of the time. IE 6 minutes out of an hour at near full amperage.
Both the Hobarts are rated at 20%. Even that will make for slow going building a pit, but it's twice as good as 10%. _________________ Joe |

Mex-BeerBQ-Belly, here is the spec list on Hobart's.
http://www.hobartwelders.com/products/wirefeed/
They are built by Miller and have a better price tag on them. I have a Miller thunderbolt stick, but if I were to buy a wire feed I would go with the Hobart's simply for price. I am not familiar with the Lincoln welders, but just because a machine is gas capable does not mean you have to run with it, they will all use Flux core wire. When one boasts it can weld up to 1/4'' remember that that is probably pushing the machine to its limits because in order to get the penetration needed you will have to crank up the Amps. If I did not have a good stick welder then I would settle for nothing less than say the Hobart handler 187, that to me is an all around machine if your going wire feed.

I have both. The Hobart 180 and a Lincoln 125. Bought my son-in-law a Hobart 140 last year. The Lincoln 125 will do you a fine job, just remember it'll take multiple passes to weld in the 1/4" range. I still think it'll be sufficient for your project. Hobart is made by Miller and is also very capable in the 125 range welders. All will run flux core wire. The smaller welder such as the Harbor Freight will only use .023 wire and it is a solid wire only requiring shielding gas. Also remember,,,,,buy a good quality brand and you should be able to get close to your money back if you decide to sell after your project. _________________ Don't talk smack to me if you can't spell.

I bought a lincoln 225 stick welder a couple years ago. I wanted to buy a mig but in the same boat i thought about the expence and if i would use the mig more than a few times. I built my offset with my stick , welded on a lawnmower deck, a few handles on a push mower for a small engine repair friend. I also built a pull behind flat bed trailer made from a boat trailer. I dont care if my lincoln sits and collects dust anymore it has paid for itself. I was at Lowes the other day they have a lincoln 225 a good deal for about 250.00. If your in the market for a mig plan on spending 500.00 + for a mig. Just my 2 cents here. |

You might want to have a go at stick/arc welding. The wire feed are great and make great looking welds but remember they have moving parts that can fail and you can only get so far from the unit. I have heard good reviews about the Harbor Freight wire feed units. My friend has one of the wire feed units and the motor for the wire feed went out, they gave him another one no questions asked after he had it for over 6 months. I personally like the stick welders, I have a real old Craftsman 230AC that I converted to DC and it welds perfect, no sticking and I have yet to figure out what the duty cycles are on it... it just goes and goes never over heats, doesn't even get warm! I bought it off CraigsList for $50.00 and build the DC converter outa parts off of a giant UPS unit that they were throwing away at my work. My favorite welder that I have is this small 130 Amp DC Inverter Arc Welder that I bought at Harbor Freight for $159.00. This thing is the size of loaf of bread and welds 1/4 inch plate like butter! The duty cycles are great on it also. If you happen to stick your rod the unit goes into bypass so the rod doesn't get orange.

If you are looking for something that will work on a 110v outlet then this is the little brother of the one that I have.

Check out this guy using it to weld 1/4 inch. This is a great little unit!!!
