Has anyone tried using red wine oak barrel or bourbon barrel chunks? Came accros them today looking for something else, and it sounds interesting to me. Thoughts?

I'm no expert but I've actually bought and used wood chips made from wine oak barrels and they were really good. I didn't get as much smoke from the chips as I would of liked, but if you have the big chunks that would probably work better.

I've never used bourbon but have used the Jack Daniels oak wood chips before. Worked well.

If I'd had the barrel chunks I'd use em.

I've used whisky barrel chips, chunks for smoking, what's nice about the chunks is that once you've got them to smolder you can put the soaked chips on top to produce your smoke, it gives the meat that your smoking a mild taste of smoke, but make sure you soak the chips at least 1 hour before you throw them on. I like smoking ribs and bottom round with whisky chips. If you mix a fruit wood with the whisky chips, you'll never want to use anything else..."WOW" that's some good smoke. Surprised

Bass Pro, in Ontario at least, sells bags of Jack Daniels whiskey barrel chips for $5.99. They smell amazing, can't wait to try them out.
