Posted: Jun 26 2005 Post subject: Barrels for new smoker construction? |
|
|
Working on building my new smoker from 55 gallon drums from my automotive shop, but I have read that it is very hard to get rid of that chemical smell (or taste) from the drums and that using drums that have contained Food products are better. Any thoughts or comments?
Thanks |

Go for the food service barrels or new ones lot less problems. Here`s one i built a few weeks ago.
It has a store bought add-on fire box, eazy to built. You need to make a heat deflector of some kind to push the heat more towards the center of the cook chamber for even heat. Works good though. |

Using atuomotive product barrells will make the meat taste like solvent or whatever was in them. Nothing will get them clean. |

The barrels i used cotained organic soy bean oil, got them from a local ice cream and milk place here in hometown usa. My boy said they smelled like i was cooking corn bread when we first seasoned it. No funny taste or smells other than that. |

If the barrels are food grade then you will be OK. It is like they are pre-seasoned now! |

Check out barrel stoves on the internet for leg sets and cast cleanout doors. Do a google search for "barrel stoves" for an excellent source for parts!
