Trying out a new lid on a new UDS build. Unfortunately, the lid rests dead center on the rolled lip of the drum. Lid is 23", drum is 23 5/16".

I welded a 1/4" rod around the outer edge of the new lid and then weld a vertical 1" flat stock onto the rod. That allowed the lid to seal around the outside lip of the drum.

I'll be adding some Rutland rope and glue against the rod, lid edge etc. Hopefully this will seal the lid when it rests on the drum lip.

I'll fill in the top weld gap with Rutland 500 degree RTV and then I'll weld a chrome 3 1/2" diameter exhaust stack on top. Finish off with some heat resistant paint.

Hopefully get it done next weekend.

Well, got the lid done yetserday, going to try it out on Sunday;

Smokenstein, I love it. Very Happy So the big question is what was the lid originally? Smile

Hey Buford/Smokenstein,
I saw this build of your's in "that other forum", and you never said what it was from over there either, except that it's "specifically made for 55 gallon drums"....so....what IS it from/made for originally?

Now, I'd like for you to make it hinged and controled by a foot pedal much like some garbage cans......

Now that would be cool...hands free lid operation...

We get that they are made for 55gall. drums but what is their purpose for said drums. Are they funnels for a liquid or is this some top secret decoder ring product. Laughing

The lid is designed to be welded onto the drum. It adds volume and allows material transfer in an out of the drum.

No seriously....is this possible to build on a UDS? How much would that rock? Smile

Yes it can be done and here is a picture of the workings. It really would be fairly easy.

That is one of the coolest smokers I've seen in a long time. I love the flames, pinstriping, just the overall bass ass look.

Well done.

Thanks!

Hahaha, you are correct. I have a bad habit at looking at something and then trying to see if it can be improved or done differently. I do not sleep well. And I have a garage full of sucesses and failures and a low balance in my bank account.

Just when I think I'm done with BUFORD, I realize that it needs modifed. I did some beer can chicken a few weeks ago and will be doing a turkey next week. I needed the extra height, more distance from the heat so instead of a Weber top I came up with the cone head, hahaha.

I'm in the process of designing and testing a difuser for the UDS now as I usually put in a water pan difuser on most of my smokes.

The side box works great. I don't have to install the basket unitl the meat is on, no flames, etc. to deal with. Can pull it out anytime to add chips, re-charge. Very convenient.

Here is a link to the "BUFORD Build" slide show has pictures of the side and basket.

I wil be building another with the cone top if this works out OK.

That is sweet looking after you finished it! Love the exhaust on the top...looks incredible.

One question inside the drum...is that a shelving adjuster thing you can move the grate wherever you want inside?
