I just finished the second UDS. It is pretty basic but I opted to use Jimbobs extended rod for the valve.
I also like the new handle for the basket, this is the second one I have done this way.
The charcoal basket. I had it blasted clean along with the drum.
The handle for the ball valve.
I built an adapter for the valve shaft.
The cooker is satin black.
And a pic of the thermometer bolts.

I done the valve on my redrum the same way but I used a gate valve. I like your basket lifter, thats pretty high tech.
Cool deal dude. |

Thank You Dan.
Thank You jhnarial,
Here is a couple of inside pics. It is grey since it was sandblasted clean.
Thank You Hell Fire Grill, The handle makes for a really steady lowering. No Lie.
Thank You Smoke Daddy, I was trying to figure a handle that I could ship with the basket and one sleepless night it came to me. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Will it have some sort of a Baffle between the basket and cooking grate?
I am just now seeing these usds and from they way everyone speaks of them, I can't help but wanting to try one. |

| Very nice k.a.m., nothing better than a sandblasted barrel, sure beats burning and grinding. |

jhnarial, this one will not have a diffuser between the basket and grates. But in the future it might.
Thank You BluzQue.
Thank You mnmgri4, I know what you mean I have one in my shop that I am stripping. It was bare steel on the inside but had some heavy over spray on the outside. It is an experimental one I am working on.
Thank You fatirishman53, There is a lot can be done while your sleeping, like planning new ideas. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Kevin,
That's no "plain old drum" ...
I did not take you serious when you told me you posted drum 2...
From now on I will be the judge of "plain old" fabrication category.
Plain is clearly not something you can bring yourself down to doing... .....
I like the basket handle idea. I always have to reposition my handle in the drum and that's no fun when it's lit.
The extended rod goes without saying!
The valve adapter is text book K.A.M. and very cool.
From a 1/2 mile distance it may look like a plain drum...
But the devil is in the details my friend.
Great job on the drum! _________________ SEE YA!

The great ideas just keep flowing! Nice job as always k.a.m.! I'll be interested in seeing the diffuser you come up with. You always build for ease of use and practicality not to mention style! I always enjoy seeing your work my friend. _________________ Homemade offset smoker 24"x48"

Excellent work as always Kevin. I like the new coal basket design. Can I place my order here, or should I go through your website I would build a UDS, but my SCUMD is priority right now, got all the 'lectrics, now just need the time.

Nice work as usual Kevin. How about some play by play pics of how you made the fire basket? What is the square grating on the bottom? _________________ D. Tillery

K.A.M very nice indeed. A couple of questions, what are the dimensions on your charcoal basket? and what will determine if you put a diffuser plate in? And as everyone else has stated nice job. I am already thinking about stealing your charcoal basket design. |

I do not understand what I am looking at when you say thermometer bolts.
Will something be bolted there later? |

Thank You patruns.
Than You Chuck, I would love to take credit for the valve extension but that one belongs to Jimbob. I have always loved the extension. Now C.J., say's we are gonna have to mod his.
Thank you Tom, I will build a diffuser for this one if my Friend I built it for wants one. Right now He wants to try it the old style way. I have a couple of ideas for the diffuser but I want to test run them first.
Thank You Joe, I am a little slow at turning out the baskets. Rolling the metal by hand is tough on an old man.
Get to work on your build i am waiting for some pics.
Thank You D., I do not have any pics of the fab of the basket but I can explain what I do.
The bottom is two charcoal grates from an 22.5'' Weber kettle that are turned 90° to each other and welded together.
I make the sides out of 3/4'' x #9 flat expanded metal 6'' tall and cut the circumference length in half. This makes it easier to roll. I then place a piece inside a piece of 18'' pipe and beat it into a half moon. When both pieces are rolled I weld them to the grates. The connecting ends are then welded together. I then strap the connecting ends with 1.5'' x 1/8'' metal to form the vertical bar. The top strap is 3/4'' x 1/8'' flat bar that is rolled the same as the expanded metal. The lugs for the handle are 1/2'' rod that I welded to the verticals and I then add a 1/2'' washer to them so the hooks cannot slip off. The legs on this one are left over 1'' square tubing from the canopy and the tray is 1/8'' plate I had. I am going to build another soon and will get some action shots.
Thank You sparkyallday, The basket measures in at 17'' wide x 6'' tall. If my Friend does not like the way it cooks with out it then I will build a diffuser for it. Feel free to make the basket it works really well. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.
