I am thinking to do a weld at sometime in my life that will be doing a thinner steel to thicker with my 110 wire feed.
Am I NOT correct in thinking if I do this it will be burning a hole in the thinner when I try to get the penetration.. _________________ ***

When welding thick metal to thinner metal you concentrate on the thicker metal and flow into the thinner metal. It takes practice but this is the procedure that is used. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

So do NOT weld on the seam but on the thick and have the puddle drift onto the thin ?? _________________ ***

If it is a Butt joint you weld the seam but concentrate the heat on the thicker metal letting your puddle flow into the thinner piece. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Tiznutbrnt I have to agree with KAM concentrate your heat on the thicker metal and move to the thinner and another welder trick is to place a heaver piece of metal under the thinner metal to draw some of the heat out of the thinner metal before it can burn through you just need to check to insure you are not welding the heaver metal to the thinner metal, also with a mig welder if there is a large difference I use a series spot welds overlapping each other welding on top of the previous and moving the weld forward then stop for a second and repeat.
Hope this helps. |

The same principal applies to all joints when welding thin material to thick.
You concentrate the heat on the thicker metal. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Kam - Yah i was wondering why it wasnt in the new forum, but i really wasnt worried about it.
Tiz - I prefer Heineken, Fat Tire, or St. Paulies Girl. haha.
I had actually planned on making some more vids that actually included the actually welding process, i made a nifty little box with a lense on it for my camera but i have not gotten around from using it. Just got back into florida a week ago from being in Las Vegas for 4 months, it sucked i didnt have a smoker while i was out there!!!
Mabe in the coming weeks i will get around to make some vids!
Yes Practice is the key, its also about getting your eye used to watch the bead and and know what its doing and where its going. |
