Anyone have an issue with me adding a link to the "Build Your Own Upright Drum Smoker" link from the cookers sticky section to my workbook for folks that want to make a UDS?

I've asked a couple of Ringers about doing a step by step, but after looking at the sticky it REALLY has a LOT of great ideas in it that I think a lot of new builders could use.

Of course The Smoke Ring would get credit for the link, and folks that contributed to the sticky would get credit since they are listed within.

This is the link I am referring to:

I don't mind it for my part... if it wasn't almost cruel I'd also like to see a link to the BBQ Brethren Mega thread http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23436 I read it when it was only 78 pages, it's nearly twice that size now!

Amazing how far back that idea goes, even if we've changed it a bit. Smile

I haev been hoping to see a consolidated UDS thread with diagrams of shelf placement and building, possibilities for building it with welding or without, fire building, etc.

For the better as the above calls for an ASBESTOS lined box.

Cheers

Famous last words...

I really like the Oil Barrel Oven because it's more indirect cooking and allows you to adjust your smoke on the fly. It also allows the use of logs (all wood cooking) and theoretically has significantly more cooking surface (not that I need more).

It is basically a firebox where you cook in the exhaust stack and since heat rises the only difference in heat per grate would be the heat absorbed by the meat and the heat radiated off the sides of the drum. Initially the heat absorbed by the lower meat will be great but it should minimize as the cook progresses. The meat on the top grate should get a very nice smoke ring...

Right...but it's neat old setup.
Put a griddle surface on the lid of that firebox and you could cook on it....until you needed to add wood

WOW! That sucker has taken on a life of its own for sure!!!

HVAC81 I've seen that before and still love it now! Big issue for me is finding the darned asbestos! Everyone seems afraid to sell it! Laughing

feldon30 I think the 2 threads mentioned will give MORE than enough info for a first time builder, IF it doesn't confuse them too much with all of the ideas and opinions...

Unless I get any differing opinions, I'll just point folks to BOTH of the threads...
