What is the weight of a hog one can get onto a 55 gal drum offset smoker? (The drum is horizontal) My buddy and I have been doing briscut, butts etc for years and my son has requested a whole hog for his High School graduation party.
Thanks _________________ If we are not supposed to eat animals, why are they made of meat? |

Maybe one that will dress out at 40-60 lbs with out a head. You may also have to cut off the feet just for room.
Similar to the size Ranucci did a few weeks back and posted some pictures. I believe he cooked his on the large side of his DP Fat 50 which is probably more area than the grate in a drum smoker. _________________ Big Tom

you'll be looking at a young pig dressed it'll be 35-50 pounds.
I guess it's gonna matter in the manner you lay it out.
I think racing will take up the least length. |

How long is a whole hog? Im talking, one in the hundred plus pound range (Im asking about other sizes also, just wanting to build it to fit the largest thing im going to shove in it)?
Im building a trailer smoker right now out of a very large tank (12' long) so I have the capability of making the chamber as large as I want.
Iv been interested in the whole hog idea for some time now, and really want to build it to fit so I have no problems in the future...
Can someone give me a good idea on the length of the hog (As it sits in the smoker, with legs and head) for a few different weight's? |

For a 55 Gallon drum you are looking at a suckling pig. The last one I did was a 100 pounder (dressed weight) head on and it took up 4 feet by 2 feet on the smoker. That was flied out not racing style. I am cooking on the Meadowcreek PR60 if that helps you with grate sizing. _________________ Weber 22.5 Kettle and Smokenator w/ Hovergrill
