My favorite so far; in the middle of welding, wondering why every time I looked to the middle of my workbench the auto darkening helmet would activate. It took me a full 5 seconds to realize that the alcohol soaked rag I was using for cleaning had gone up in flames Rolling Eyes

I hope your nose healed. Loved k.a.m.'s suggestion to re-enact it...that was funny.

I am a repeat dumb a$$...

I haven't been hit in the nose yet, but do have a scar on the top of each foot from two separate incidents. I was "only going to weld for a minute" a few months, so had on shorts and old deck shoes/boat shoes.....whatever they are called these days....the leather things you wear without socks.

Slag landed in my shoe, I gave my foot a shake, while still welding, thinking it would cool off soon. It did not. Instead, this made the slag wedge between top of foot and top of shoe. I have a high tolerance to pain...or so I thought. After getting hotter and hotter, I finally kicked my shoe off, but finished my weld before looking at my foot, and realizing stuff was embedded in it. This left me with a nice little divot on the top of my left foot that took about three months to heal.

Last week, I apparently forgot about my "note to self" and did it to the right foot. These old shoes are pretty tough.

I think my reflexes were a little faster this time, though, because instead of a single divot, I have multiple blisters where the slag was rolling on top of my foot as my foot was trying to get out from under it.

Another note to self.....

One day, I figured to drape the stinger over my shoulder because I needed a free hand. That was my big mistake. See there was a twist in the cable, and when I let go of it, that hot rod tip spun back right up against my neck... Embarassed

"Where's my sign?"
Any port in the storm. As the saying goes, those little red ping-pong balls will find any place within a three-rail bank shot of their point of origin, and within range. Point in case, never, ever sit on a stool, facing the work bench and mig weld. Spatter can land on the stool and roll places not advantageous. Woah! Not since basic training have I sprung to attention so fast!

I think anyone who has picked up a welder for more than about 10 seconds has had a run in with the little red men.

I used to work in a die cast plant, and we never laced our boots tight(temp workers never seemed to get this tip) Twisted Evil . The machines were hand pour, and 1400 deg aluminum in your boot was more than enough to make you dance. The only thing worse than that was when the dies were cold or cleaned they would spray for the first few shots.

It happened again the other day. I had my helmet up and was chipping away when a rather large piece flew up and hit the inside of my helmet and pinballed down to land on the back of my neck...cue my sweet dancing moves!!!

I had a nice 1/2" long scab for about a week

Smokin'Roe, Step away from the chipping hammer. Wink
Don't chip until you can hold it bare-handed.
As you already know, no good comes of it. Shocked

Long time ago i used to wire weld 2" long 45's on 14 guage door frames every day.We got fast and didn't use clamps to hold them together or scrape the paint off just to "tack" the backside. You would hold the corner together with a couple fingers and use your thumb mashing down to keep 'em flush and just jamb your wire up there hard to get thru the paint and pull the trigger.Thing is,about once a month that hot wire would slide over and stick thru the crack and poke a hole in your thumb.Usually just thought it was the metal gettin hot until you had to pull back.I've had 2 or 3 sealed off holes in my thumb at times and be sore as hell but we could sure spit them frames out.lol
