Toysrme, yep I dropped the ball on the 7014's my bad it has been a long day with contractors I apologize.
I however do not store my rods in a Tupperware container and they store just fine thank you. You are correct people are free to buy what ever they want and lets leave it at that enjoy your stay at the ring. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

that's no worse than forgetting the temp low hydrogen rods must be put at to attempt to reverse moisture. i mean at one time, for quite a long time. knowing 450-550*F was critical information to have lol!?
#sighsoembarrassing
btw, tupperware makes bread loaf containers that make you feel so stupid when your sig other buys them and your friends come over... until you realize they're about 14" long and you can fit about 25lbs of standard electrodes in them. solved two problems instantly |

Ok I can't help but throw some lighter fluid on this fire. I side with K.A.M. We are not going to x-ray or magnaflux our welds on a cooker. I've used 25 year old 7018s with no problems. Oh and they haven't been in a rod oven or humidity tight container.
Basically if it sticks 2 pieces of metal together and looks good that's all we want. Trailers are another story, it's all about safety. |

Most of the welders on this forum are backyard welders, some with Oxy, some with stick and a few Mig welders with or without gas, there are not many with an expensive setups or fully equipped workshops. |
I haven't had a full time stick welding job in 10 or 12 years, plenty of time to forget the ins and outs of stick welding.
But I do have a welding shop with 2 miller 250's that I use to tig anodized aluminum and one millermatic mig for steel and aluminum odd jobs.
Full time T-top and tower builder here, that thinks he wants to build a smoker.

gandrfab, very nice work on the T-top. That would look nice on my bay boat.
I never found much of a use in tigging building oilfield truck beds and refurbishing older ones for re-sale. It required a bit more beef. Most of the racks surrounding the winches were 4" SCH 80 pipe while on the smaller ones we used 4" SCH 40. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

gandrfab, that sounds real inviting. Now all I have to do is convince Debbie we need to do something like that and that my Friend maybe harder than it sounds. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Greetings,
Just another opinion to throw into the firebox.
I purchased a Miller MaxStar 160.
Straight stick welder....no options.
It's about the size of three of the old Sears & Roebuck catalogs.
6011 rods are the cousin of 6010 welding rods.
They are designed to run on A/C as well as DC welding current.
Will run 100% all day long with 6011-1/8" rods.
Plus it runs on 110/220, 50/60 htz.
(In case you're in Europe building pits )
The Lincoln 225 Amp, AC machine will last a lifetime.
Rock solid all around machine.
Had one and gave it away when I bought the Maxstar.
Still using my O/A rig.
Got a Victor torch with 2 Oxy/1 Acyt owner bottles.
For grinders, I had one for 20 years, the heavy duty Black & Decker. It must have weighed in at 20 pounds. Finally died.
Got some Dewalt's and they seem of good stock.
Buy yourself some good extension cords, 12/3's.
Be careful with Craigslist, lots of dubious folks.
Keep your guard up!
Regards,
Mad Max
