speed70 - I am not sure how you could have a bad hotspot by the firebox on a RF unless the firebox was way undersized and you had to keep a roaring fire to keep the temps up. Attaching int RF plate is a very common practice as should not be the cause of having a hot spot in you cooker. Also, looking at what you have as the main chamber of the cooker, the firebox you have comes in at 71% of the size it needs to be. It is better to be a little large on the firebox than be undersized. For the opening to the firebox to the cooker, you should have about 110 sq inches.
Take a look at the calculators under the cookers sticky and you will see where I get the information above that I mentioned above. http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20871
Hope this helps.

speed70, I make the R/F plate a continuation of the top of the firebox. The distance between the R/F plate and the lowest grate can be between 1" and 5" in my opinion.
Given your cooker and firebox size a half moon opening of 17" wide x 8.5" tall will give you an area of 113.49 Sq.in. this is slightly larger than you need but when you add a 1.5" grease bridge you will be back in the numbers.
I hope this helps. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

speed70, so you do not want your grates to slide out is what your saying because Langs are drop ins on the lower section. Just place your rails to what ever depth you need. If your using 1" tubing for grate material and #9 flat expanded metal for the surface then the rails would need to be set about an 1" 1/8" lower than the opening.
I like either horizontal slides or vertical slides I do not care for spinners.
I hope this helps. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

speed70, I would place angle iron supports for the grates.
Your 7" x 25" opening will be plenty big.
