I think it was this one, not sure. Works great! Smile

There are others out there too.

The Windows 8.1 update brings back the start button. Sort of... Instead of the familiar start menu it'll now take you to the start page. It also will let you boot directly to the desktop.

This is why I use DOS Very Happy

Do you load it with your cassette or have you upgraded to an 8" floppy? ROTFLMMFAO!!!

Kinda makes me feel old knowing what DOS is Embarassed Laughing

I was thinking the same thing. I'm not only old enough to remember it, but I even used it pretty regularly. Laughing

I fit in that club! Laughing I loved DOS, it was so much better than hassling with JCL punch cards (or later card simulators).

I used DOSSHELL between 1991 and 1993 when I got my 386 with Windows at work.

Wow, punchcards. DOS is as far back as my oldness goes. Smile

I wrote my first program on punch cards in the basement of the computer center at 'Bama. I was 10 at the time.

Damn, I forgot about the punch cards. And the punch tape (if that's the correct term - been awhile) that the teletype spit out. I was the biggest computer geek in the 70's - Waaaay before Apple and IBM PC's. We had a class called 'Computer Lab' and our class project when I was in the 7th & 8th grade was building a computer from a kit. It was an IMSAI 8080. Hi tech stuff at the time. IIRC the memory boards were 8 Kilobytes each, on an S-100 Buss.

We had punch cards in the Army in the early 80's, that and micro phish....[sp?] I remember a buddy getting out after 6 years of being an Army computer tech, started looking for a computer job in the civilian world [ 1986 ish] - they all laughed at him...he re-enlisted!! Shocked Cool

I'm a DOS man myself.. I remember when we had to nudge the bosses to migrate to Win3.1. Actually still use DOS from time to time as some of the EPA programs are still DOS based FORTRAN. Currently use Win7 at work. Glad they kept the DOS shell or I'd be screwed.

for those that may want a new'ish puter.

I bought a couple refurb Dell desktops 's from walmart dot com for $212.00 loaded with Win-7 Professional, and got the Win disk with it.

I built a satellite POS terminal with it, I liked it so damn much I got one for myself at home.

Now heres my problem, I cannot find a way to download XP emulator on 7 pro so I can run some older office programs that do not work with 7 or newer. "THE VALIDATION TOOL IS NO LONGER SUPPORTED" is what I get for an error!

UPDATE: I updated to win8.1.......freaking mistake!! It now forgot half the crap I had to straighten out when switching laptops, now upon update - it started off merging my 2 different outlook based accounts, then - for no apparent reason, just dropped one! NOW, when I hit the window for my BBQ account, it will pull up my personal account! Evil or Very Mad I cannot have them both open at the same time as the personal acct will over ride my BBQ acct......Speakers dont work right since update either...did I mention WINDOWS 8 [ AND 8.1] SUCKS???!!!
These are just the two top major issues, there are more....like missing emails for Christmas cooks during all this as it would swap its own desires at will, I guess........

Microsoft gets an okay operating system with about every other OS. It won't be long there will be another new system since we have beta tested for them and it will work. Windows 8 will go down in history with Millenium and Vista. You can buy 7 online but it sucks to have to buy another operating system Crying or Very sad

Tony my Friend. Bite the bullet buy a new PC with Windows7. Go to Dells website and order from there. Problem solved. Wink

Windows 8 is intended for the touch screen tablets for the most part. It does indeed suck for a laptop. Glad to hear I can still get 7 'cause my 2 month old laptop with 8 just broke. It seems I have spent almost as much finding my way around as I did when first introduced to 3.1 as a first time computer user.

Download and install a program called Classic Shell. It will give you back a real start button and menu and you can make it look like windows 7's. The best part is that it is 100% free.

Well that sucks for ya. Might be time to take it to a tech geek and let them figure it out for you. That would probably be money well spent.

I'm kinda in the same boat trying to get used to the Android OS. I just got another tablet (running Android) and some things are driving me nuts Laughing .

Bought dad a reconditioned HP for Christmas with Windows 8. Upgraded to 8.1 (free). 8.1 has a quasi start button and you can boot directly to the desktop. Installed all his crap on it. (Even Lotus Smartsuite from 1999.) He only goes into the tile area to play spider solitaire. If an 81 year old man can learn to use it comfortably, so can everyone else. It is actually faster than Windows 7. (I know, I upgraded my own PC.) Just takes a little getting used to. Rolling Eyes
