How long are you here for? What do you like to do? Will you have a car?

Here is the list we send to people coming to visit. My wife just sent it to as former work colleague in Germany that is coming to visit next month.

Some suggestions (items in blue are what we would highly recommend):
(the museums and other items are dependent on your interests)

Boston

Freedom Trail http://www.thefreedomtrail.org/
Faueuil Hall & Quincy Market http://www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com/
North End http://www.northendboston.com/
(should have dinner there and go to Mike’s Pastry for a dessert/treat) http://www.mikespastry.com/
Harvard and Harvard Square http://www.harvardsquare.com/
Harvard Natural History Museum http://www.hmnh.harvard.edu/
Newbury Street http://www.newbury-st.com/
Museum of Fine Arts http://www.mfa.org/
Science Museum http://www.mos.org/
Duck Tour http://www.bostonducktours.com/
Red Sox Game http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=bos Register with them to receive e-mails telling about ticket sales. You can have both adults in the household enter, too. You need to put in your email address and date of birth. The other thing to try is to call 1-877-733-7699 (1-877-RED-SOX9) a few weeks before the game and see if you can buy tickets over the phone. Sometimes they have tickets close to the day of the game by phone. It is a hit or miss thing. You can try one day and they have nothing, and the next day they get some tickets in and they go in a few hours. You can even try right up until the day(s) right before the game -- or the day of the game.

Massachusetts

You might try Sweet Cheeks Q. The briskets not bad for yankee land and the buttermilk fried chicken is great...

Paul hit on all the major things... I guess it depends on your tastes, to which ones you gravitate to (historical, fun, sports, etc).

For food, I'd stay away from BBQ up here. Although there are some good ones, you'll probably be disappointed. Go with more local flavors... N. Atlantic seafood, lobster, Italian can be really good up here.

Have fun and enjoy your trip.

Oops. You're right. We don't eat seafood, but it is the thing to have if you're in New England.

If you have a car check out the New England coast places here.

Just walk around the north end for Italian. Hanover Street, Fleet Street, and a few other side streets. A lot of them have great early bird deals.

If you are pressed for time, just want to grab a quick bite, and not spend time and money on food, McCormick & Schmick's in Fanueil Hall Market Place used to have a very inexpensive early bar menu as long as you buy a drink. My wife and I used to do the burger and fries for a few dollars before shows at the Bank of America pavilion.

Are you driving here from PA? If yes, when are you headed back? The Nautilus museum in CT is worth checking out.

How are you driving up?

I avoid 95 through CT and RI.

I do Tappan Zee - Merritt-Wilbur Cross Parkway - 91 - 84 - 90.

The Mark Twain House in Hartford is really neat if you do 84.

http://www.marktwainhouse.org/

He was just a final Jeopardy answer: "The monument for his grave in Elmira, New York is 2 fathoms tall."

Good BBQ place not far form the Mark Twain house.
