Thanks Flyingj and ollllllo I have been making some progress not as much as I would like but I have a week of vacation coming up next week that I plan on hitting it hard. I got my handles put together and I think that they are going to look good.

Thanks KAM I'm glad that my ideas are panning out like I had hoped they would. I'm working on finishing the other door as I type this just letting it cool down some don't want to get it to hot and cause myself more work by being in a hurry. Tomorrow I plan to start on the cooking grates. Trying to decide whether I want to build them out of round stock or expanded, what would you suggest? _________________ R/F Smoker |

I pride myself in unique things on my cooker builds. And if I had the material rod grates would be a nice addition. They are a lot of work but in the end they are pretty cool. Now on the other hand there certainly is nothing wrong with #9 expanded metal grates and I use them often because they are functional and readily available to build. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Thanks KAM I decided to bite the bullet and do something different than before, and go with the round stock I went with 3/8. I spent several hours cutting and working on the spacing to get it right. But I'm liking what it is looking like. I'm going to try to get the other side knocked out tomorrow.
Thanks ollllllo they are turning out nice. _________________ R/F Smoker |

Well I finally was able to get my grates all fabed up now I just have to do some more clean up welding and make them look a little nicer with a few spots here and there. I ended up using 3/8 round stock and framing it out with 3/4 angle on 1 inch runners.

Thanks Sgt Stel they are a little heavier than expanded metal grates but they do look nice they should also be super simple to clean. _________________ R/F Smoker |

Nice work man, I like it. I made my grates out of round stock as well, I think you will be glad you went that route. Really like the beer can look, pretty cool. Looking forward to seeing it finished _________________ Backyard Offset

Thanks for the compliments on my build it has been a work in progress for a while. I still have some stuff to finish up on it before it is complete. I'm going to put a stainless steel shelf on the front, and a toolbox to store wood for cooks on the back side. Then I have a few other ideas that I'm working on to finish it up. But I was able to take it to the fair cook off and spend some time cooking on it. It will take me a little bit to get adjusted to it and learn how she likes to run. But I was still able to bring home some hardware.

That's a great looking smoker you've built there, I like the way it looks. Can you tell me what the thickness of the tank is? I've found a source for scrap propane tanks here in Ky. and it sounds like a fair price for them, $125 for a 120 gal. and $150 for a 250 gal tank. Is that a good price or not? _________________ If Ya Can't EAT IT, SHOOT IT, S***W IT, OR RIDE IT, IT AIN'T WORTH WASTING A WHOLE LOT OF TIME ON! |

Hey Wiskers thanks for your comment. It is a 1/4 thick tank it is pretty standard from what I have heard. On the tanks that you have found are they new or used? I have seen a lot of tanks sell for $1 per gallon so if you can pick one up for $150 that is not to bad of a price in my opinion. If there is any other questions you have I will help you out anyway I can. _________________ R/F Smoker |
