I shouldn't be shocked to hear that from someone who pick the name Harry Nutczak

dont worry about him...he doesnt compete and has already laid out some great excuses if he ever does...Let me know when you are ready to sell some of this stuff I would be more than happy to try it out on a brisket or 3...especially since it looks like Lotta Bull is going to be at every single contest I do this year...

I don't compete often, and never make excuses Dawg! Wink Very Happy

You still won't find me using any of that crap! (no offense intended). If you feel it makes your meat more palatable for the judges, more power to you! Very Happy

Sounds like Big Jim's cash register is going to start cha-ching'ing shortly! Best of luck with your new wonder product! Very Happy Don't forget, Garry offers great rates on advertising! Very Happy

Yeah I just dont see the need to attack anyone or their product because you wouldnt use it...The fact remains that some BBQ cooks use it Fast Eddy and Dr. BBQ come to mind and I doubt that there are many that would question their BBQ prowess.

I think that most folks who have never done the competition thing confuse competition BBQ with backyard or even restaurant cooking...it isnt the same. But when the difference between top 10 and everyone else is just a few points anything to give an edge is likely to be looked at...I dont know that I will be usign Fab B or whatever this new product is, but I wouldnt mind giving it a whirl one weekend.

I'm with Dawgphan

If rolling it around on the ground before turn in would win then I'll be rolling it around on the ground Twisted Evil

It doesn't surprise me that people that don't compete have issues with using products to give you an advantage over the next guy?

When the scoring in BBQ competitions gets broken out to thousandths of a point(KCBS goes farther with 4 decimal places); those that are either looking for an edge, or trying to stay at the top, will use what ever method is allowed by the rules.

The competition is that tight and the prize money is that good.

Excuses??

Fah-Q!!!!!

I will not eat food with that crap in it, and I would not serve it to anyone if I would not eat it!

Ride the wave while it last's boys, Cuz I got a gut feeling it ain't gonna last long!

And when it does crash, then I might consider doing a competition.

It is a morals issue for me.

So you have morals issues with food and not about the mentally challenged? Now that's saying something. Ohh I forgot that you could also beat the Iron Chefs.

While I try to be diplomatic these days (try it out Harry, it ain't so bad! Wink ) I have to agree with Harry on this one! Laughing

Same reason I can't get past "celebrity" judges and all the rest. While I realize that judging is (and will always be) a subjective matter, just cause your a celebrity doesn't mean you know good Q from shoe leather!

Roll it around in dirt, pump it full of shizzle, have at it fellas. Kinda reminds me of grade school were some of the kids needed to cheat off your paper after you studied your own can off to get a good grade............. Now I realize it isn't technically cheating, so once again have at it. Unless the playing field is level as far as the rules go, count me out!

Just curious Big Tom- I know you do a lot of comps, and do well. Is it really profitable over-all, or do you just make enough money (or less than enough) to support the hobby?

I'm not going to get into this discussion because I've made my position clear in the previous MSG thread, but you're kidding yourself if you don't think you eat it, Harry. You may not add it directly to what you cook, but I'd bet it's in some of the products you use.

This is an interesting article that I posted in on older MSG thread if anybody is interested.

So anyone that uses something along the lines of MSG or Fab B or this new product is a stupid grade schooler that deals crack....nice fellas...

But thanks anyway...

It is going to take some real doings to ever break even cooking BBQ, but it is fun...a little more fun when you get a call, but fun none the less...

I didnt metion the crack dealing thing, but that's ok Dawg! Laughing I also mentioned that it certainly isnt technically cheating.............. Enhanced meat is just that- enhanced meat. Suit yourself, if you need it to win, that's fine. If I need it to win, I will choose not to participate. Take that for what it's worth! Very Happy

The MSG thing has been BEAT to death here as well. Yes, it and everything else on earth are "natural occuring substances". Does that mean that adding more is a good thing? You decide to use what products you wish. Once again the rules should be the same for everyone. I choose not to use products with added MSG Hogwild. I don't visit restaraunts that ADD MORE either..........................

No but you said that you agreed with Harry. I dont think that you have to do it to win...just the childishness of the folks against it makes all of this just seem silly..You dont like it...good for you...dont eat it...great, but no need to go and blast folks who do.

Not intended as a "blasting" Dawg, just a different view! Very Happy

I have done some comps, and will continue to do some in the future. I just find this to be an interesting thread, that's why I chimed in! Wink

The fact that some (but not all) folks that win on the comp. circuit use meat enhancers to get those wins is certainly something to debate. Hey, if you need Viagra as an enhancement, I guess there's nothing wrong with that either! Laughing

I understand that, BBQMAN, and that is your prerogative. Just curious, did you read the article I linked to?? I'm not trying to change anybodies mind here, cause I don't have a dog in the fight, but it really is an interesting article on the history of MSG.

Similar to my response to Harry, though, you eat "added" MSG in restaurants all the time. I'm pretty sure a restaurant has to disclose if they are adding MSG (Ac'cent) to their dishes, but they don't have to disclose if some of their ingredients have it in them. Drop a couple bullion cubes in some boiling water and, whalla, lots of MSG you don't have to report.

different opinions are and views are fine, but comparing folks using something on their comp meat as dumb school kids who cant get it done without it is simply wrong and derrogatory...

which one? I was more of the kid that didnt study and still did alright...

If I could not study and pick up a few points while staying within the rules I am all for that.

right now I am in the "not studying" group because I have been cooking BBQ for just a couple of years. Picking up points and not breaking the rules is something I really need to do to make up for my lack of experience...hell I am often competing against teams that have been cooking comp BBQ for more than 1/2 my life with some doing it longer than I have been around....I am just trying to level the playing field.

Me diplomatic???

Hmmm, I can try, but it aint gonna be easy.

There is another thread with me ranting about about not being able to find meat that as not been enhanced while shopping in one of our two local food stores.

And now I see it being added after the fact. it just tweaks my beak!

What next guys? someone wins a comp by using irradiated meat, will you all go building DIY meat irradiators? or maybe soak your meat in the cooling ponds at a nuclear power plant to get that edge??

well if you could soak your meat in a cooling pond after meat check in, then yeah...doing it before hand would be illegal. Look no one is doing anything illegal and no one is doing anything that will get anyone sick. Eating 6 slices of brisket that may or may not have been injectioned with MSG isnt going to kill anyone...

but again I dont think that you get that cooking comp BBQ is different than cooking for your family....most cooks hate the judges Wink ...I would feed them dirt and spit if I thought that I could win with it...

Look we finished DAL in winchester...it hurt...it hurt a lot...I felt like packing it up and heading home and forgetting about comp bbq. If anything can prevent that feeling again I am all for it....of course cooking the chicken all of the way would have fixed it also...
