If I go to a NC joint with no hushpuppies or sweet slaw I walk out. Period. There are things that HAVE to be there if you're cooking BBQ according to certain regions. In NC, it pork, vinegar, hushpuppies, slaw and a bun. Anything after that is icing on the cake anything LESS and you fail. |

Well being as im on the road alot I have a few from Different states.
Angus Pit Stop BBQ
608 S Service Rd
Calera, OK 74730
(580) 434-7867
They have the best Basic dry rub ribs I have ever eaten and there sweet tea is great, No PP just smoker Pork Loin and there Briskit is great as well. Sauce is on the side and has wonderful flavor...
KIBBS BBQ
1102 E Harrison St
Stuttgart, AR 72160
870-673-2072
Strange story but at about 10:30 in the evening during a week day I stumbled on this place. Got 2 Briskit Sandwiches with Medium Sauce and 2 PP Sand's with Slaw and Med Sauce at there walk up window... I jumped back in the truck and drove off. Got about 4 miles down the road and my buddy and I looked at eachother slammed on the brakes did a U-Turn and went back. We each ordered 5 Pounds of Briskit, 5 Pounds of PP and 10 Suasage Links and had them wraped and iced to go. I cant tell you how good there Briskit is. Espically late when they just pulled it off the smoker.. _________________ If you can legitimately say that Guns kill people then I can legitimately blame misspelled words on my pencil...

Bucky's BBQ in Greenville, SC. Best commercially available BBQ I've had in 20+ years of traveling around the country, bar none (no one else is even close). I've been numerous times and they are remarkably consistent as well. _________________ I likes to eat 'da pig!

There are several in the Kansas City area. However my personal top three are as follows:
Zarda's- I would not say that it ranks as the world's best, but it is very consistant. I love the sauce. Located in Lenexa, Ks and there is another one on the Mo side.
K&M- Located in Spring Hill, Ks it is usually good. They have a sandwich called the Killer Combo that is a you pick three meats they put it on a six inch bun (triple stacked of course) and you try to cram it in your mouth. There has to be at least two pounds of meat on the thing. The sauce is not bad either.
Gates- Several locations around the metro area. There infamous "Hi may I help you" and you better know what you want or they will just move on to the next person till you do. The overall flavor is good and the sauce is ok, but like with Zarda's they are very consistant.
Jack Stack I have not been to. Rosedale BBQ is good, but it has been nearly a quarter century since I have eaten there. I guess that the BBQ Shack in Paola, KS is good. I have not eaten there, but I have had a few employees that have raved about it. And he belongs to the smoke ring. _________________ thepitboss

I've been to Bridges in Shelby NC and agree with you; it's very good!
In Gastonia NC there are several that are good.
But Hillbillies is my favorite! Their sweet tea is just right and the hushpuppies are great!
That's my favorite part of the State to visit beacause of their BBQ's! _________________ Shellfish, Q and beer! My trilogy! |

If I'm not mistaken(been a little while) Hillbillies has a pretty good steak as well. Just don't forget to stop by the convenience store next door. They always have Sun-drop and Cheerwine in the glass bottles and on ice. |

Indiana... strangely both in Lafayette (well not strangely, I think the second one was opened by a former partner of the first)...
South Street Smokehouse (HWY 26 & 52 intersection just behind the muffler or brake shop and the acropolis greek restaurant. Everything is damn good.
Scagnoli's Cajun and BBQ .. downtown on corner of 6th and Main. As you can tell by the name, they do traditional bbq stuff AND cajun.
Both are well worth your visit...I have consistently had better bbq at both places than at some of the places I've visited in other cities based on their bbq awards and notoriety.
*******EDIT********** Scagnoli's has closed since I wrote this...a damn shame.

I think you read me wrong lol! Cornbread goes with a lot of things such as beans and taters, Brunswick stew, buttermilk but not BBQ. Hush puppies goes with fish here in Alabama. BBQ is served here mostly with beans/ tater salad/slaw/fries/corn on the cob etc, but never hush puppies, cornbread or Brunswick stew. I have eaten a sweet corn muffin with BBQ before that was decent but not real Southern cornbread which ain't sweet. I was served hush puppies with anything I ordered in the Carolina's including fried chicken. If I had stayed longer I might have seen somebody put ketchup on nanner puddin' lol. Must be a regional thing. I like all the foods mentioned but just not together. I can never get used to the soupy Q there though. Got to hit some more joints there one day and sample other kinds for sure. |

By far my favorite BBQ joint has been Lagerheads in Abbeyville, OH. I had some of there ribs at a rib cookoff in my town. On a trip to florida this past winter i had the chance to swing through the resteraunt. WHAT A PLACE! For whatever reason, i expected it to be some big ritzy chain looking resteraunt in the middle of some busy part of town. When i got within about 50 yards of the place i was starting to suspect my directions were bunk while looking around a quiet country-ish neighborhood - i had mistaken the resteraunt for somebodies house! Inside had a nice warm home-y feeling like everybody else in the place knew each other by name. Aside from the atmosphere totally selling me, the food was excellent as expected, and the beer selection was nice too!

Here in Alabama and in my humble opinion.
Ribs- The original Dreamland in Tuscaloosa, the others are not that great to me. It's been years since I have been. Also Crite's right outside of Athens near the nuclear plant has some might fine ribs. If anyone goes there it looks like a hole in the wall, dirty and old, but the health dept gives them very high ratings, I just think it is the age of the building that gives it that look.
Brisket- Personally I prefer Chuck Wagon in Madison. If my briskets turned out that good, I would be a happy man.
Pulled Pork- I like Chuck's in Opelika/Auburn, look forward to it every football season.
Sauce- There is a little place off the beaten path in Hollywood that I haven't been to in about 6 or 7 years called "Mud Creek BBQ" and they use to have the best sauce I have ever ate. Unfortunately the owner and his wife have now passed on and I think the sauce recipe went with them. They were outstanding folks and were close to my dad's family. Delicious sauce, but even better company.
I like Big Bob Gibson's (in Decatur) pies for dessert, and the food is pretty good as well. |
