This has probably been answered somewhere a thousand times, but I can't seem to find it. I am building a reverse flow out of a 250 gallon propane tank and mounting it to a trailer. My work so far is being documented with pics. When I have enough to start a thread, I will share them.

Q: What is the ideal thickness of the plate steel that goes along the bottom of the tank that creates the reverse flow?

Q: How large does the opening (opposite the firebox) need to be?

Q: Does that plate need to be tacked, welded, or held in place by gravity? It seems that a tight fit and held in place by gravity would make it easier for cleaning.

Smoked Up, to me the ideal thickness would be 1/4'' for the plate. I would let it run at a slight fall to the end opposite the firebox and end around 6'' from the end. If you weld in a bridge just behind the end of the plate on the bottom of your cooking chamber, and have your drain there nothing much should ever get under the plate. I have never built one but this is how I would do it.
