I am building a stainless steel horizontal rf smoker. Will be using a chuck of 30x54.5 in pipe which is 38504.25 cubic inch.
The firebox will be s/s 24x28.375in pipe which is 12836.17 cubic inches. The firebox will be placed perpendicular to the cooking chamber.
The vent pipe will be s/s 6x22.71in which is 641.81 cubic inches. The fire box air inlet will be 3-4in holes? The firebox to cook chamber opening 6x18in?
Was wondering what you guys think. Do I have to hit the cubic in numbers on the vent and firebox or can I go a little bigger?
Does the vent have to come off the top of the cooking chamber or would it be better to come out the center end of pipe then 90 up?
Door opening on the cooking chamber was thinking twelve o'clock to 1in below three o'clock. Go bigger or smaller?
How high off bottom of pipe should I put the reverse flow plate and how much room should I leave at the end of plate to the end of pipe?
How high should my grill be above the reverse flow plate?

Your number's look ok to me. On a 30'' pipe i would come off of 12oclock 3'' or so it will make the door easier to open. An inch below 3oclock would be fine. I like my stack to come off the top of the cooker. I would go around 3'' below your cooking grate to the rf plate. I would put the rf plate at the top of the opening of the firebox. Nice score on the pipe. High$$$$$ stuff. Very Happy

Welcome to the ring swampyankee, looking forward to seeing some pics of your cooks and following your cooker build. Smile
Door opening on the cooking chamber was thinking twelve o'clock to 1in below three o'clock. Go bigger or smaller?
On 30" pipe I go 6" to 6.5" below 12:00 for my top cut and 1" below 3:00 on the bottom. This will easily allow for two grates at around 6" spacing.

Was wondering what you guys think. Do I have to hit the cubic in numbers on the vent and firebox or can I go a little bigger?
You can increase your sizes a bit and still be good to go I like a bigger intake.

How high off bottom of pipe should I put the reverse flow plate and how much room should I leave at the end of plate to the end of pipe?
I make my firebox to cooking chamber opening at the very top of the firebox, the R,F plate is a continuation of the top. I like between 1" and 5" between teh R/F plate and the top of the lowest grate.
Make sure your opening opposite the Firebox is as large as your firebox to cooking chamber opening.

Does the vent have to come off the top of the cooking chamber or would it be better to come out the center end of pipe then 90 up?
I prefer my exhausts to be out the top but you can place them between the top and grates with equal performance.
Kinda out of order but I hope this helps. Smile

Hey guys. I have been really busy, had a baby girl ect. just got back to working on the smoker.
I changed the fire box from round to square shape. Took my pieces of pipe cut lengthwise and then used press brake and roller to flatten out to make my square fire box and end caps for cook chamber.
Saved some money not having to buy stainless flat plate. My firebox is 24x24x24 =13824. Bigger then recommend but not by much. The firebox to cooker opening is 103.82. Should be a half moon shape size of 19x7.5 = 105.96. Does this sound right?
now my reverse flow plate needs to be 1 1/2 times the 7.5in of the opening? 11.25? and that's what I need for space and the end of plate correct?
going to try and post up some pics this week .

swampyankee, Congrats on the new addition to the family I hope her and Mom are doing fine. Very Happy
Your half moon is good.
Place your half moon at the top of your firebox then let the R/F plate be an extension of of the top of the firebox opening. The opening at the opposite end of the firebox should be at least as big as your firebox to cooking chamber opening.
I hope this helps. Very Happy
