Alright guys, check it out. My wife was kind enough to bring this from Santa:

This is a $79 unit from Farm & Fleet. The question is should I take it back and throw some of my money towards a better unit? I'm guessing that I would have to spend another $100 to $130 for a Miller or something?

As I'm just a hobbyist, do you think this is good enough?

Thanks for the advice,
Ed

Nice score from Santa there Cat797. Totally your call on what to do next. They are not your name brand hood by any means but with a little care, and you probably not using it day in and day out, I dont see why it wouldnt make you a nice hood. Welding hoods are just like anything else, you get what you pay for, but, with a little care, it will probably last you a while.

Just my 2c worth.

Ed, congrats on the new hood. Very Happy I looked at Fleet and Farm and they must of had a Christmas discount running cause your hood lists for 120.00 on their sight so Mrs Santa did good.Very Happy I read the specs on the hood and they seem pretty good to me. I would give it a run for its money and see if you have any issues with it before the return time is up. The only thing it does not list is how many sensors it has.

Thanks for all the good comments folks..........

k.a.m. - It has 4 sensors on it.

I tried it out earlier today and seemed to work ok, so I'm going to give it a run for its money. I can't really justify spending $250 on a helmet that will sit most of the time.

Hey Smokenstein, glad you noticed, I did get some new flannels, but I bought them for myself!!! Laughing I had to buy something to wear in the garage becaus the misses doesn't like me tearing up my "good clothes".

Reporting in that so far, so good. It's obviously not as nice as some helmets I've had the privilege of wearing (i.e. Speedglas and Nexgen), but it gets the job done.

For any of you looking for a reasonably priced helmet with auto-darkening lens, you can find this and several others at Farm&Fleet, and there are some in the same price range at Tractor Supply. I would assume that those of you lucky enough to have a Rural King would probably find similar.

Cheers,
Ed

I am thinking more along the lines of those of you lucky to have a Missus Santa that buys toys rather than flannel shirts and am still looking to find similar. Laughing Keep the hood. Wink
