Took my youngest son (Just turned 16 last month.)to the Dr for headaches, and had a Cat Scan done. They found a mass in his brain and are going to operate on him Monday. Please throw a Prayer his way for a successful outcome. Can't tell you how scared we are, and we know prayers do help.

Thanks,

Bigjoe and family

2/13

Thanks everyone. So far....

Johns going into surgury Monday if the portible MRI machine is available, maybe later in the week if it's not. Steroids seem to be working to reduce the swelling around the tumor/cyst. They won't know for sure what it is or what type till the biopsy, but they are going to remove all of it at the same time. The operation will take about 9 hours, as they'll cut out the mass, take an MRI scan, and repeat till they have it all. It's sorta close to the brain stem, but they think they'll be able to get it all. From what they see and because of his age they think it's a low level tumor, or cyst, but won't know for sure till they go in. They said it's in the Cerebellum, which is the best place to have it if your going to get it. The part it's in is mainly where his coordination and balance are, and with his age he should recover what he loses by another section of the Cerebellum taking over the damaged parts duties. Even with the better news from his Dr, we're still scared as hell. Can't wait till it's out and we get the results. Not knowing and trying to keep Johns spirits up is hard, at least his DR gave him hope....which the ER Dr destroyed totally. He came back after the MRI and told him he has the worst cancer possible in the worst possible place and if he's lucky he'll live 2 more years. Hearing your son tell you he don't care about wrestling, (which he LOVES), he just wants to live, tore me up bad.If I ever see that ER Dr, he better be in ER, cause he'll be a patient there for a while. He's lucky I was in shock that day...

They couldn't do the surgury yesterday because they couldn't get the special operating room they wanted, so, he went in at 8 this morning. They gave him some 'Happy Juice' to calm his nerves, but he was in good spirits. Praying for good news in about 8-9 hours....

2/17

The surgery went well, they were able to get the tumor completely out the 1st time they went in. We were prepared for 8 hours and he was being closed up in 2 1/2. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

John felt good the next day, but had a hard time last night. (He got out of ICU last night around 9pm) He woke up dizzy and was throwing up, they took him for a CT scan around 4am to make sure he wasn't bleeding in his brain. It was the swelling that messed him up, so they upped the dose of steroids for him. He's still feeling sick to his stomach, but at least he's starting to go to the bathroom. If he keeps improving tonight, we may be taking him home tomorrow. his goal was to get out so he can watch wrestling sectionals this weekend, he may yet do that. Wink They couldn't get a definitive result from the biopsy so we're going to have to wait for the results till the beginning of next week to see if it was cancerous. We appreciate everyones prayers, they've been answered so far. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy We're still praying for the results to come back negative, and would appreciate your ongoing prayers for him.

2/18

Well....Johns goal was to make it out in time to see his teammates at Wrestling Sectionals. His Dr didn't think he'd make it when he asked her before the surgery.

Guess he attained his goal and proved her wrong....

3/4

Went to the Drs Tuesday, it's was cancerous. Things are going so fast. Already went to the Chemo Dr and to the Dr thats going to put in his Medi-Port. Radiation and Chemo Drs are gonna see him next Wed. He's going to have 6 weeks of Radiation, a month off, then 6 months of Chemo. I think he's starting the treatments the 14th, and if all goes well, he'll be done by Christmas. Still seems like a bad dream. At least the Tumor was the kind that responds to treatment and they were able to remove it all. Just need to kill off the microscopic cells that may have branched out. The Drs are leaning towards a good outcome. Please continue to include John in your prayers.

All the best to you and your family Joe, we all hope for a successful treatment and recovery.

I would file a complaint against that ER doctor if nothing else. Even if it was the truth (and that sounds like not the case) his "bedside manner" is lacking to say the least. Mad

It puzzles me how some doctors show no compassion or human emotion.

I'm just glad he doesn't have the final say on life and hope he never has to taste his own medicine (sorta)...
