Posted: Tue Feb 28 12 2:54 pm Post subject: New To It... Question About Burners |
|
|
I've been eyeballing discada's for quite some time. They just look too awesome. The pics you guys post up of the food just make them too irresistible. And being that I'm a huge fan of Mongolian BBQ, this sounds like a fun little project. I was at Rural King (like a redneck Walmart) last night, and low and behold, there was a discount skid with 22" discs on it. Picked one up for $10. A bit rougher face than I cared to see, but that can be smoothed out. Pics of the build will follow, I'm sure.
Now, onto my question... How many BTU's will I be needing for this? I've seen anywhere from 30,000 to 60,000 BTU's readily available locally. One that caught my eye at the redneck Walmart was the Camp Chef single burner @ 60,000. http://www.campchef.com/single-burner-outdoor-cooker.html
Or are there better options? I will be building my own stand to house whatever burner I go with. _________________ Something Witty |

theklOwn, I really don't know how many btu's are needed.
I''ve been using 170,000 high pressure burners with adjustable regulators.
Mostly because I was ordering the disks anyway and they were pretty cheap.
Let some of the other guy's chime in and give thier input, I said it's what I'm using, not what's right.
BTW the mongolian BBQ sounds interesting. |

Thanks, GF!
As I understand it, Mongolian BBQ is a universal thing... Kind of like a DIY stir fry buffet, where you walk around the buffet line and pile on your own goodies and at the end someone puts on the sauces you want (or chooses for you) and someone else takes it over to a large frying surface and fries it up for you. If you're a big eater, it's frustrating the first few times, as it's an art to stack the food properly to get as much possible on there. (it may look like a lot until you get your plate back after being fried up)
Anyway, where would be some good online outlets for finding the burners. Looks as though Home Depot has some 100,000 BTU burners for $50, but not in-store. Personally, I'd rather just have the burner and not have to deal with all the cheap brackets and stands that come with 'em.
Edit: With some Amazon shopping, I've come across a few more options... The price seems right on these: http://www.amazon.com/Bayou-Classic-BG10-Cast-Iron-Replacement/dp/B0009JXYSW/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1330458413&sr=8-8 Plus orifice and regulator, of course. _________________ Something Witty |

theklOwn, I've been ordering from here http://www.agrisupply.com/
The prices are good and the service is also.
As I said earlier, let some others chime in and get a few opinions before you decide on anything. |

I plan on getting the disc welded up, ground down, and ready before I actually purchase anything for the heating side. I wonder where I can buy time at? 'Cause I could use some. _________________ Something Witty |

theKLOwn I would go with gf's suggestion....i'm not to impressed with the low pressure burner i bought. I think the high pressure with an adjustable reg would be your best bet......bwtfdik _________________ RF Smoker

theklOwn, I missed your amazon burner link before.
It looks like the same ones from agrisupply but they sell em for $7.95.
I think any one you buy is gonna be cheap cast iron from china.
Sorry, don't know where you can buy time. But I'm sure after it's all set, you'll make time to use it. |

Progress! 22" 7ga disc. Welded and ground. Pitted much worse than I'd like to see, so I'll be dropping it off for a good sandblasting once I figure out the handles I want. Thinking about good ol' spring handles, but not sure what stock I want to use. Nothing too extravagant, as I get the feeling I'll be building/buying a new one shortly after I complete this one.
Pics to follow tomorrow...
Thanks for all the input! I looked at agrisupply, and I'm thinking that's where I'll start that portion of the journey. _________________ Something Witty |

Just mash it down with the palm of your hand as you go along the line.....
( Wife taught me that, she's pretty smart about stuff like that !!!)
Good luck with your build !!! _________________ Have Fun Playin' with Yer Food !!!

Gotta agree going with the Agrisupply source, especially for the price. I do have a pair like the Amazon link shows and am very happy with their performance. AVOID the low pressure banjo style for Discada cooking. I've got 2 gathering dust on the shelf. _________________ I was taught to respect my elders. It's just getting harder to find them.

Well, it has begun! Got the disc... Welded the disc... Sandblasted the disc... Seasoned the disc... Ate from the disc!
Day 1... Getting her home
Welded and starting the smoothing process
A bit of pre-packaged stir fry, with some extra chicken, corn, and teryaki added. It was awesome. Old cat approved too.
Wound up using a turkey fryer base I bought at Home Depot. Came with a 30qt stock pot, which will be used for chili come fall. Went ahead and switched out to the burner from AgriSupply.com, and wow... What a difference! _________________ Something Witty |
