I have made several discadas. I have a wire welder and am learning to weld.
What is the trick to keep the weld from leaking? Some of my discadas have leaked athe the welded up hole and some have not. I have learned that the cleaner the metal is the better success I have.
Any other advice?
Thanks,

Jm2c #1 bevel the plug you are going to weld in.
#2 bevel the disk
#3 weld as hot as you can handle the puddle
#4 grind your tacks to a feather edge.
#5 when you flip the disk to weld other side start in a different spot than you did on the other side and you will burn over start stops which will give you better penetration. should work like a charm. _________________ RF Smoker

X2 on the clean metal.
Are you using flux core wire or gas?
Not sure how seasoned a welder you are, but your welds should be "melted" into the metal on both sides. If it looks like a bead of caulk or toothpaste, you need to go hotter.
As far as the wire speed, run it up til the wire starts pushing the tip back away from the metal, then slow back down just a little.
Also your "kernal", (the little ball of fire at the end of the wire), MUST touch both pieces you are joining.
Be consistient with your motion, whether you use a C or a circle type motion, and make sure you are not outrunning your puddle. _________________ Arise, kill and eat...Acts 10:13

Maniac,
Thanks for the wisdom!
I did 1 & 2.
I am not sure what you mean by 3...maybe you mean as hot as you can without burning through?
#4 has me a little confused...Tack the plug in place then grind off the tacks then do the final weld?
I will try #5 for sure.
I guess my response makes my inexperience very obvious! I really appreceate your advice,

Thanks for your help browning!
I have a Miller 250X(I think that is what it is) with gas.
As far as how seasoned I am....I would say that I am as "green as a gourd". Trying to teach myself and its a slow process. I will try the wire speed idea tomorrow.
Thanks again for the help!

sorry for the confusion....when we weld a few tacks to hold it in place we take each end of the tack and bring it to a feather edge so when you burn into it , the edge will melt and flow the metal easy...you won't have a cold joint build up with no penetration...hope i helped clear the confusion a little. _________________ RF Smoker

I understand now....just dont think my skills will allow that yet.
I am off for the next couple of days and will give the above advice a try.
Thanks again for the help.
