Okay, so I calculated that I need a 6" diameter smoke stack at 36" length, or a 5" at 50".
I called a couple of local shops and here is what they have laying around for a good price.
What should I go with?
6"D 1/4" thickness 3' steel pipe.
6"D 14GA stainless steel 3' pipe.
5"D 1/8" thickness steel pipe.
If I go with the 5"D pipe, if I use two 25" lengths instead of 1 50" piece would that be okay?
The stainless is pretty thin at 14ga, but it's cheaper than the steel price, and if it'll work then I may just do that. |

Have you checked with a good muffler shop? _________________ Pat

Thanks Patruns... I didn't think of trying a muffler shop.
Another question I have is will I have a problem trying to weld the SS pipe to the steel tank? I've never welded SS before, so if I'm going to need to spend more cash on special wire or rods, then it may not be that good of a deal. |

On my Staineless USD build I just mig welded the steel nipples to the stainless barrel. The weld will rust but so will the rest of you steel tank if not painted. _________________ Peck

SmokinVA, you can mig it and the weld will rust some. If you go stick you will need to get a 309 rod for the job and the weld will rust some this is the rod for welding stainless to carbon steel.
As Pat mentioned 6" muffler pipe is nice it is light weight. 6" .125 wall would be what I use only because it is readily on hand at little or no charge.
I hope this helps. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

I'm having a hard time locating 6" exhaust pipe in my area. I've called both local muffler shops and neither one carries anything this big.
Any other ideas on who might carry it? |

Like Donny said truck stops but they are pretty expensive. Next jump 6" .125 wall. go for it. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.
