I'm looking to build 4 UDS's as Christmas gifts for close friends and my Father-in-law. I was wondering where you all have found to be the best bargains on 22" grates and lids? Any help would be appreciated. _________________ Chris

| Big Lots sometimes has a grill for $29.99 that will get you a lid and a cooking grate and another smaller grate that you can you as the base for your firebasket. Also my local Home Depot has a pretty good supply of repacement grates in various sizes. Good luck. |

Walmart carries the grates for around $12. At the end of the season they usually clear their stock for as low as $5 _________________ Bud

| Walmart carries a similar grill, Uniflame, that will work as well. I'm not sure of their regular price, but I just picked up a couple for $40 each. |

I can post these dimensions if you like. I'll post the dimensions of my drums too because they're not all created equally from what I hear.
Another thing about the Uniflame that doesn't appear in the link you posted is that it is hinged. It looks like it will work with the drums pretty nicely. |

The Uniflame has thicker metal than the BL one. IMHO, get the UF.
This is my first UDS. The hinges need to be tinkered with for a fit. I just flattened the lip out and kept it closed with vise grips.
Hindsight, after looking and reading here on the Ring, I would put flat bar around the inside of the drum. It would look prettier and seal better.

I just built one with a UF lid. The catch was I knew theoutside diameter of the lid was 22.5in so I bought a drum that size. The larger/heavier dums were like 23 in outside to outside and would have worked good with a weber lid. The BL lid is only 21.5 diameter so its a little small. Bought grates @ walmart for 12 bucks. But u can buy weber replacements for like 22 bucks that are much heavier built. _________________ Jason
