So let me start with, I HATE windows8....not just cuz I'm too old for all this techno gadgetry and high tech button crapola, not even because its different - its because it sucks!
I now get messages for replies on my phone only...didnt block the ring, cant even find a way to do it if I wanted to...did I mention I HATE windows 8?...anyhow...just yesterday I stopped getting emails altogether, decided to try rebooting laptop when it told me things changed....WHAT THINGS? Then it says I must reboot to make changes take effect....WHAT CHANGES? So I somehow set the thing to original configuration, reboot, then AGAIN it tells me I must reboot to make changes take effect....did I mention I hate windows 8??!! Took 5 min to find restart button...who moves stuff like that to the entirely opposite side of the screen after decades of a "start " button, [must be taking lessons from faceplant].... which now has sooo many tiles on it, it takes 2 cups of coffee just to scroll over....IMHO, windows8 sucks....
So - any guesses why I receive junk mail but not ring email on laptop with windows8, which SUCKS?! Or is that just how it is, because as I may or may not have mentioned previously - I HATE WINDOWS 8

My wife and I are contemplating a new computer and heard bad things about Windows 8. Is it still possible to get a PC with Windows 7?

It's possible, but you'll have to talk to a computer maker salesperson directly. You won't find them in stores usually, but if you call a company like Dell (or any other that sells direct) you can usually get them to give you one with Windows 7 on it. We do it at work, but we do tend to buy in bulk though. So your mileage my vary.

I have a commercial Dell account. I usually get the fast track machines for my office preloaded with 7 professional on them. They ship directly to my office with in 3 days.

Mr Tony - Tell us how you really feel. Don't sugarcoat things, we can take it Wink Laughing . I know exactly how you feel. I went to the computer store to get another laptop and within 1 minute of playing with Win8 I felt so confused I needed a beer Laughing . They had a couple of models that still had Win7, but nothing I wanted. So I bought a tablet instead. I still need another laptop so I might check out fleabay or a pawnshop.

I went through the I hate windows 8 myself when I got my last laptop, great laptop stupid O/S, these articles helped me get up and running in the shortest amount of time.

I now use the desktop just like I always used to on Windows 7 and before, I think out of the other tiles I use 8 or 9 on an irregular basis.

We have 7 on our laptop. 8 was just coming out and I could get an upgrade.

The computer person that transferred our data told us to stay with 7. He said that 8 is more for tablets and people with regular computers really don't like it at all.

Very pleased with 7 after previously having Vista.

OK.....does it have that thing where if you scroll across the screen with yer mouse all kinds of stuff you don't want or even know what it is pops up all over the place, ping ponging & all pinball machine-like?

My buddy (a computer whiz ) told me that some programs were known as.....get this: "bloatware".....seems everybody, sites, O/S, software, is on that particular bandwagon nowadays...... Twisted Evil

Yeah.....well.....you can keep it.....I'm stickin' with my Windows 2000.....and having stepped into the current century with that setup, I'm happy & suggest y'all should follow suit..... Very Happy

PS: After doubling RAM, I was still sluggish.....come to find out the Java / Adobe flash thingy hadn't been updated since Feb. 2011 & all this time I was mad at them !!!!

If you choose the customize option when ordering a new laptop, or desktop online, most computer manufacturer's still offer the option of Windows 7 being installed.

But in my humble opinion, if you purchase a desktop, instead of building it yourself, or having someone you know build it for you, you are wasting a lot of money.

I bought a new HP desktop with Windows 7 last September just as Windows 8 was coming out. I received an offer from Microsoft to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $14.95 that was good until last February. I bought it and sat on it until June when I finally installed it as I heard 8.1 would be coming out and would bring back the boot to desktop and the start button. Started to regret the decision but after a few days I got used to it. I almost exclusively work from the desktop so when it boots up, I just click on the tile that shows my desktop wallpaper and I am there. I install any new programs directly from there. And when I did the upgrade I had to update some HP files first. Guess what I found on the desktop... A START BUTTON! HP kindly added their own version so I can find all my programs. When i am ready to shut down, I just hit ctrl+alt+delete and right on the lower right of the screen is a little shut down button.

@Tony: You probably have auto update enabled so Windows did it's thing and that is why you got that "changes" message. Either turn it off and update at your leisure or bow down to the Great Oz in Redmond and place your complete trust in them. Smile

Once you get used to it, it is not as bad as everyone said.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm not only old enough to remember it, but I even used it pretty regularly. Laughing

I fit in that club! Laughing I loved DOS, it was so much better than hassling with JCL punch cards (or later card simulators).

I used DOSSHELL between 1991 and 1993 when I got my 386 with Windows at work.
