I picked up a project that the guy couldn't finish now I'm in a design pickle. In the pix you can see a Sharpie box drawn on the tank (I added the white lines), that is supposed to be where the smoke will enter the foodbox. The exhaust stacks will be on both sides of the barrel about 1/3 up from the bottom. My thinking is that the smoke, even though entering from the high-side, will have to fill in the tank before being able to leave through the exhaust. What does everyone think? I will also have a fan attached to a temp gauge to auto stoke the fire for temp control in the foodbox

I have one that is built on a similar design except the exhaust is straight off the top. It works well and I can use it as a smoker or as a grill but it's not fuel friendly. I can run it at 250 or 400 for hours, but I have to babysit it.

Because of that, I'm going to try a reverse flow. If you haven't cut your tank yet, you might want to look at other options, but it depends on what you want and what works for you.

k.a.m. will probably weigh in here and help you decide

I would probably raise the exhausts and lower the firebox to cooking chamber opening. If I am looking at the plates correctly you could divide them and use the lower as the firebox and use the top part as a warmer.
