Is there anything different or special techniques for welding well casing? My local scrap yard just got a bunch in and it's in pretty decent condition. The guy that runs the yard said he would sell it to me for .25 lb. He gave me a 16' piece to play around with, I'm going to mess with it this weekend and see how it cuts and welds. Just wondering if there is anything extra I need to know.
I raise a few beef cattle and they are always busting round bale feeders. If this pipe is easy to work with then I'm going to get a bunch and build new feeders. |

It may be magnetized if so you will know it when trying to strike an arc. If it is you can try wrapping your work cable around it several times then clamp it. Try clockwise and counter clock wise to see which works best.
I hope this helps. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

If it is just for feeders weld it with what ever.
If it is structural it will take more thinking |

An "old school" pipeline welder once told me to place my joint of magnetized pipe north and south and rap it hard with a sledge hammer to demagnetize it! _________________ 250 Gallon Trailer Build |

Not real sure about the north-south orientation part, but the sledge hammer will do the trick. I've always heard that if the blows don't get it at first, to try a different orientation. _________________ All's well that ends.......... |

Thanks for the tips guys, it must not be magnetized, I didn't have any problems welding it. I used the practice piece to repair a broken hay feeder. I'm going back to pick up enough to build some new feeders. |

Is that like telling the new guy to the ship to go to Engineering and ask for a BT punch? Or sending the new guy to the squadron across the airfield to get 5 gallons of prop wash and 50 yards of flight line? LOL!!!! _________________ AD1 (AW) Ret

SHIP? They did both those to me when I worked at a helicopter training facility. Of course I was just an admin clerk and still in high school. Also the first boy to work in that spot.
Flight line, prop wash, sky hook, an by the time they got to left handed monkey wrench I knew what was what.
Great lines though, hadn't thought about that in years. |

OK I don't know squat but I am suppose to be a nuclear physicist, at least I was once....
Heating the metal should remove the magnetisms.
Hitting the pipe could have a similar effect but heat is a sure bet.
The heat will energize the electrons and randomize the electron spin. Magnetisms is when the electrons are all in alignment.
I believe about 300ºF would do. _________________ -------

Trying to weld a heavily magnetized piece of pipe will throw the whole heat idea out the window. The arc blow is a pita sometimes. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

No doubt your right KAM. I've only welded a little and I'm
really $#!^ at it.
But heat will destroy a magnet. You may have to heat the whole pipe to do it.
Anyway, it was just some fun science facts to know.

Its all good Brother none taken. I have cut it with a torch and faced the same problems but I imagine if you could heat the whole pipe it would work. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.
