I've built a few vertical straight through smoker, and they cooked great, but I've been wanting to build a BACKWOODS/HUMPHREYS clone for comps. The only thing I'm not sure of is the placement of the ducting inside the smoker for the intake and exhaust.

If you have a few hours to kill, there is a guy on youtube-70kirkster- who does a great job of explaining his vertical builds throughout the process. His videos are shot while the frame is naked AND during the skinning process. While it isn't necessarily a plan like you want, it does give great visual reference for things.

He also built a shop rocket stove heater that was pretty cool.
