We get asked quite frequently how to post pictures here at The Smoke Ring. One of the forum rules is that pictures not exceed 650 pixels on the long side. This messes with a lot of folks so I'm going to show you how to do this quite easily using Flickr.

In order to use Flickr you must have a Yahoo account. If you already have a Yahoo account then you can skip the registration steps and move along in the instructions. One thing to note is that if you want to post your pictures anonymously using a pseudonym then you should create a new Yahoo account with a name that protects your identity. I will show you exactly how to do that.

Here's the link to Flickr; https://www.flickr.com/

Registering for a Yahoo Account:

After you go to the Flickr web site home page, click the Sign up with Yahoo link

Next you will be presented with a sign up screen, Fill in the fields. This is the time to decide if you want to use your real name or a pseudonym. I used a pseudonym in this example. Yahoo will offer some suggestions on your email address or you can choose your own. They will let you know if the address is taken.

Verify your phone number. Choose the option that suits you.

After you receive your verification code, enter it and click the Verify link.

If you've done everything right then you will get a Congratulations notification. Click the Lets get started link.

Confirm your Flickr setup information, then click Next

How to upload photos to Flickr

In the upper right hand of your Flickr page you'll see some icons. Click the icon that has an arrow pointing up. If you hover the mouse over the icon it will give a tool-tip to "Upload".

You'll be presented a choice to either drag and drop your photos or to navigate to your photos using file explorer. Add you photo using either method

You can add a description and/or change the filename, plus there are other options which is outside the scope of this tutorial.

Once you have your photo information in place, then click the Upload link located at the top right side of the page.

10UploadConfirm by Smokin Mike, on Flickr

Confirm the upload

If everything was successful then you will see your photo in your Photostream.

How to create BBCode for posting your picture in a forum:

Select the picture that you want to share then click the link in the bottom right of the arrow pointing to the right.

Select the BBCode option then choose the picture size. To accomodate the pisture posting rules at the Smoke Ring then choose a size 640x480 or less.

The link with the BBCode is pre-selected so all you need to do is right click it with your mouse and 'Copy' from the pop-up menu or ctrl-c from the keyboard.

How to post a forum picture:

Start a new topic or post, enter whatever text you desire, then paste the Link using the mouse right click or ctrl-V from the keyboard.

You can now post your topic or preview it using the options from the eidtor

That's it! You're done!

Important Notes, Tips, and Suggestions:

(1) Flickr has a mobile app that allows most of these functions however it does not allow you to select the picture size. In order to do that you should use Flickr from a desktop pc or upload the photo with your mobile device in the intended resolution. Hopefully Flickr will address this issue in the near future.

(2) You should setup albums in Flickr to organize your photos so that future retrieval will be easy to do. Your photostream is a large bucket that contains all your photos and over time it will be harder and harder to locate the photo that you're interested in.

(3) You should note that when you paste the link to your photo it also contains a URL for the person viewing the picture to go to your Flickr page and it also displays your name. This is why it's important to consider using a pseudonym if you would like to retain your privacy.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I hope it helps.

The common complaint I hear about Photo Bucket is that the user "tried" to post in the correct resolution but it didn't come out that way. Flickr seems to do a better job at that feature plus you don't get as much "in your face" advertising.
