Hey guys -

Was working on my smoker over the weekend and it's almost done. It's nothing special, couple of ol 55g drums. Anyways, I'm about to build my grill for it but i'm worried about what metal to use. I was talking to the dude at the metal place and he said not to use regular steel for it, because it can leach in to the meat. He said to use stainless steel only. Have any of you guys had any problems using regular steel?? Stainless steel will cost 100 bux for the grill. Regular will cost about 30.

The grates/grills on my smoker are regular expanded metal.

The leaching applies to galvanized steel. It emitts a gas when heated and toxic material when in contact with food that contain acids.

Hey thanks guys. So i guess regular cold rolled steel round tube will work just fine.

If cold rolled steel cause health problems, we would all be dead. Almost every BBQ is made from painted steel, ovens for that matter too. Stainless steel is used for 1 reason, appearence. I sure does look pretty. If you are using old drums, be sure that they didn't contain any hazardous materials, or were coated with any type of liner. Rusted steel will clean up nicely with some sand blasting.
